Predicting Winter

When I was a young boy, I was staying at a friend’s house, helping them with work that needed to be done. She was a much older woman who, in reality, could have been my grandmother by age. One day, we were outside working, and she looked up and said, “There is enough blue sky for me to make a Dutchman’s breeches.” Not fully understanding what she was talking about, I was glad when she explained that to determine if the weather is going to break from cloudy and stormy, you look to see how much blue sky is visible, and if there is enough to make a pair of breeches, then the bad weather is moving on and the sun is coming out. On that particular day, it held true.

On another day we talked about more weather lore and even how to predict what winter would be like. On that day she looked up and said with all of these clouds winter would be very snowy. Unfortunately, she had told me that on the wrong day for the prediction to be true.

For the prediction to be true it must be done on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which is August 15th. I do realize that is a Catholic High Holyday, still, we can use the energy of the day to predict what winter will be like. The prediction also must be made before 10 am as well. As you can see this is some hard rules to follow, still a fun thing to do.

If you would like to give it a try may I suggest that you record your findings so when winter does come you will be able to look up what you predicted. If the skies are blue and clear a mild winter will be heard. Puffy clouds of snow everywhere will bring much snow in the winter air. If rain falls cold and ice will fall as well. These are the different winter predictions I was taught. If you have a different sky or a mixture record it, see what happens and you may learn some more clues as to what winter has in store for you.
