Sigils

Journals

Something that can be a help to us and be made in so many different ways are sigils. These are pictorials of desires we wish to manifest in order to bring forth change within our lives. They can be created in many different ways, from simply using the alphabet or numbers and combining them, by making a magick square, or just drawing what you see as your end result.

Let’s talk about the basic use of the alphabet. Write out your name full or nickname; it doesn’t matter for this practice lesson. You will need to cross out all duplicate letters so when you are done, there are no repeats. Once you have one of each letter from your name, the fun part begins. All you need to do is combine them into a pictorial. When doing this for a magickal purpose, you can write out a single word or a sentence, and do exactly what is described above. In this case, your pictorial will be not just the combination of the letters randomly, but arranged in such a way that when you look upon it, you are reminded of your end goal.

There is also a way in which you use a magick square. These are different squares of numerical values arranged within a larger square. You can find copies of the different squares online, the most common being planetary. What makes these squares magick is every line even the diagonal lines add up to the same number. To create your square, you will need to make a key to convert your letters into numbers. Write down the numbers one through nine. Then starting with one and A, write one letter under each number. When you reach nine, go back to one, until all letters are under a number. From there, you will change each of the remaining letters of your name to a number. With the magick square of your choosing, find those numbers on the square. At the starting number, you will place a circle, and from that point, you will draw a line to each number. If you have a repeat of any numbers, you will draw a line back to them. When you are done, you will draw a line across the sigil line to mark the end. You can draw this directly on a square or tracing paper.

Besides these two methods, there are several different other ways to create a sigil. Which way you choose will depend on your personal preference and outcome. These are very powerful tools at our disposal. A good book for further research is Practical Sigil Magic Creating Personal Symbols for Success, U. Frater, Llewellyn Worldwide (2012), ISBN: 9780738731537.
