Birthday Calender

In the middle of last summer, my husband and I were talking and we realized we missed one of our niece’s birthdays. Which of course it’s troublesome and realizing that we really don’t have a log at all of those special days we set out to collect the dates of all the birthdays, anniversaries, and even the passing of loved ones. We collected all the information and from there, it was just a matter of figuring out how to keep this information. In the past, you would just keep it in a little journal also old address books actually had a section for birthdays and anniversaries.

To keep our dates I decided to go a slightly different route. when we were over at a friend’s house a few years ago she received a birthday calendar which is a record of all the birthdays in her life. It’s a bar that is sectioned into 12 spaces, and from those 12 spaces are little discs that hang down. On them in some form are the dates and I assume the names of the individual people. Now I’ve really never got an up close and personal look at her piece. Being close friends I know the dates of some birthdays and even being a few feet away I figured it out. Even If I am wrong about the true reason for hers It gave me the idea for this one.

My version is similar in the respect of the top bar that I have spaced with 12 sections and coming from them are larger disks, each segment is about 3/4 to an inch wide and the circles hang perfectly in the middle of each section. The disks have on them the person or person name like for an anniversary, the date, and if they had passed the year that they passed I also added a little hand drawing of a simple to make the date more recognizable for either a birthday (balloon), anniversaries (flower), for someone’s passing (candle).

The top bar where all the discs hang from is separated into twelve spaces and in between those pieces I created a fun little artwork for decoration. As we head into each month the space in between has a symbol of a special day for the next month like a heart, clover, egg, fireworks, so on and so forth. You can certainly do that as well or nothing at all, I felt it was a way to add some extra whimsy to the piece.

While I was making mine I thought of a fun idea to add sigils or attach little crystals to each of the disks to give the people they are linked to a little helping energy and also to honor the loved ones that had passed.

The way I created mine was by drilling a hole in the top and the bottom of each disc which allowed me to attach them together with wire so if at any time I wanted to add a new disc to it I just need to remove the wire, add the new disc and reattach the former disc with a new piece of wire. Then on the back, you can draw your sigil or drill another hole to add some crystals or both if you wish.

Now that we’re in the new year we can try to get ourselves a little more organized and this calendar will help us achieve that plus the added advantage of also having a wonderful conversation piece. It’s something nice to have as well as it’s functional you can always look at it and remember those important days. In the one I created, I added special events as well there are certain times of year that we do things and go places for festivals and whatnot which helps us remember those days as well.

This was a really fun piece to make and was even more special since it was a Christmas gift which my husband really enjoyed. This was a fun little project which is perfect to create on a snowy winter day. If you do create it I hope that you will share a picture of it and show us your creativity and perhaps in your version you will have come up with a different design.

May your days be blessed with magick and mystery, till next time.
