The Evil Eye

Nazars.

The Evil Eye is one of those strange, dangerous, and sometimes mysterious things that can wreak havoc in our lives or give us protection.

The Evil Eye is a very real and potentially destructive, damaging curse that can be put on you by someone just by the look they give you. The Evil Eye has been around since the time of ancient Rome and Greece, when it was believed that a person who became too boisterous and full of themselves would be cursed with the evil look of the Gods. Throughout all of history and religions, there is some story of the Evil Eye.

The premise tends to be the same. The evil glance comes from a jealous person, due to the success of another. Some people just have malicious intent in general and give you a look of evil. It is believed that even though men can give the eye, it is generally women  who cast it, just as in various parts of the world, it was believed that it was only witches who placed the eye on you. Even today, the Evil Eye is very real in most of the world — even in America, where although not all may believe in it, they are still all aware.

There is, of course, a way to protect yourself from the Evil Eye. Depending on tradition, it can be as simple as not boasting to someone about yourself. Repeating a verse of protection, women in some parts of the world paint their eyelids black. In other parts of the world, people place dots, seen or unseen, to protect against the eye. There is one very famous and recognizable way, as well: the amulet Evil Eye (or Nazar).

You know which one I am talking about…the blue, white, and black glass bead in which the bead is a dark blue with a white dot, which has a sky blue dot on it, and then a black dot on that. They also come in flattened eye-shaped beads (as well as various other colors nowadays, too). Plus, if you are adventurous, you can crochet yourself an Evil Eye. I have seen them at art festivals amongst macrame; they are very stunning and impressive, and you could make one into a dream catcher if you wish.

I am sure this quick look into a very common reality is giving you a better insight into the world of the Evil Eye. May you always be protected and never give it.

Blessings,
High Elder Redhawk
